Thank God I Was Born Poor

Being poor taught me many things – like how to adapt and survive, how to overcome adversity, how to be strong yet humble, and how to appreciate what I had.  Being poor also taught me how to Ask More out of myself.

I just started reading David and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell, and although I’m only through a few chapters, it really is a fantastic book. Gladwell taught me that being poor to many seems like a disadvantage, but in reality all the things I went through are actually an advantage in all aspects of life.

Overcoming adversity is truly what builds character and makes us strong. When going through an adverse event, it’s tough to see it as an advantage, but like the old adage, what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger, adversity is truly an advantage.

When you have to fight and struggle for everything, you learn to be humbled in the temporary defeats, but also learn to appreciate what you have.  Adversity teaches you not only to just Ask for More, but just to Ask questions about how to overcome the struggle and rise to the top.

Next time you are going through a tough challenge, whether it be at work or your personal life, remember that that challenge, the adversity, will actually someday be an advantage in the future. Thank God I grew up poor or I probably would not be the person I am today.
